Visakhapatnam: As forecast, Andhra Pradesh received 21 per cent of excess rainfall this south-west monsoon (June 1 to September 30), according to the quantification by the IMD. The state received a cumulative rainfall of 629.2 mm rainfall against the normal of 521.6 mm (from June 1 to September 30) with an excess of around 21 per cent during the monsoon period this year.
This year, the monsoons arrived early on June 2, two days before the scheduled date of June 4.
The monsoon covered the entire state on June 20. Parts of the state have reportedly experienced a good amount of rainfall between June 1 and June 10. The rainfall activity declined from the second week of June and it improved from mid-July to August. Not a single district in the state recorded deficit rainfall, according to IMD, Amaravati.
The rain distribution has been good in coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) and slightly low in Rayalaseema region in the state. The CAP and Yanam sub-division received a cumulative rainfall of 755.9 mm against the normal of 601.4 mm with an excess of 26 per cent while Rayalaseema subdivision received a cumulative rainfall of 482.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 408.6 mm with an excess of 18 per cent.
The state had recorded above normal category rainfall for the four consecutive years from 2019 to 2022 during the southwest monsoon though it recorded 13 per cent deficient rainfall during the monsoon in 2023
Though technically the southwest monsoon ended on Sep 30, rainfall activity in the state, however, will continue till the first week of October. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon in Telangana, is likely to begin from the second week of October, said an IMD official. He said the increased rainfall activity may boost the yield of various crops in the kharif season in the State.
