Kerala minister K Radhakrishnan who got elected as MP, resigns

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala minister for the welfare of SC/ST and Backward Classes and Devaswom, K Radhakrishnan, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan following his election from Alathur Parliamentary constituency.

On his last day in office, Radhakrishnan signed a significant order ending the practice of calling places largely inhabited by the members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as “colonies.” According to the government, the term “colony” denotes enslavement. “There have been demands from the scheduled caste community and scheduled tribe community members to do away with the usage of the term “colony”.

The minister said a cross-section of people including those residing in such areas have come up with alternative names like “nagar”, “unnathi”, “prakarithi”. “Such names would be considered in consultation with the inhabitants,” he said.

Radhakrishnan also resigned as a member of the legislative assembly from Chelakara constituency. He met speaker A N Shamsheer in his chamber and handed over his resignation.

Radhakrishnan who is the lone LDF MP from Kerala, became a minister in Nayanar Cabinet in 1996. He defeated UDF’s sitting MP Ramya Haridas in Alathur by a margin of 20,111 votes.

The CPM central committee member was elected as Speaker of the Kerala assembly in 2006 and inducted into the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry in 2021. His resignation from the assembly necessitated a by-election in the Chelakara constituency in Thrissur district.

“I have tried to discharge my duties as a minister to the best of my ability. The government has initiated several programmes for the benefit of the marginalised sections,” he said.

Radhakrishnan said the party had entrusted him with the task of contesting the Alathur Lok Sabha seat.

“I thank the people of Alathur for electing me to the Parliament. I will take up the issues of the people of my constituency in particular and the entire state in general during my stint in the Lok Sabha,” he said after submitting his resignation to the Speaker.
