Visakha Port achieves record in cargo handling in May

Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has announced an exceptional performance for May, 2024, reaching unprecedented levels of cargo handling. This remarkable feat not only signifies a major milestone in the port’s 90-year history but also highlights the VPA’s unwavering dedication to operational excellence.

In May 2024, the VPA accomplished a new record of handling 85,81,927 metric tonnes of cargo across 221 vessels, surpassing the previous record of 76,22,732 MTs set in March 2024. Notably, in the dry bulk category, coal & coke witnessed a historic discharge volume of 22,35,891 MTs from 48 vessels, breaking the previous record set in July 2022.

Similarly, bauxite saw a discharge of 5,04,815 MTs from three vessels, surpassing the March 2024 record. Manganese ore handling reached 4,37,270 MTs from 17 vessels, eclipsing the July 2023 record, and limestone discharge amounted to 3,08,213 MTs from five vessels, breaking the May 2022 record.

Furthermore, in liquid cargo, a record 14,27,223 MTs of crude oil were handled from 13 tankers, surpassing the previous record set in March 2024. Containerised Cargo achieved a throughput of 70,539 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) from 53 vessels, surpassing the August 2023 record of 67,636 TEUs. The rail interchange operations also reached a pinnacle, achieving the highest ever number of train interchanges at 1,405 rakes, surpassing the previous record set in January 2024.

M. Angamuthu, chairperson of VPA, lauded the team’s dedication and expertise, stating, “These record-breaking achievements stand as a testament to our steadfast commitment to operational efficiency and delivering exceptional service to our trading partners.”
